I haven't done a build thread in quite some time and thought this one might be worth posting.
Very basic engine. No crank trigger, no fancy oil pan, no exotic valve train, just a good solid build that should last a long time.
Here's a run down on the details:
Dart BigM Sportsman 9.80 block, 4.60 bore
Scat 4340 crank. 4.00 stroke
4340 H beam rods 6.535 with ARP2000 bolts
Mahle 4.600 Pistons & rings, 13cc dome, 10.56:1cr
Rollmaster billet timing set
Clevite H series bearings
Canfield 310 heads, ported, with 2.30 / 1.88 valves
Straub Tech valve train w/ 1.55 springs installed with 235# @~1.95
Crane Gold rockers, 1.7/1.7
Smith Brothers 3/8 x .120 wall pushrods
Jomar stud girdle
Morel .903 hyd roller lifters
Straub custom hyd roller, .25x/.26x @ .05, ~.690/.630 lift, 109 lsa.
Melling Select 10778 oil pump
Stefs/B&B oil pan
Edelbrock Victor 454R with 1" spacer, ported to 4.3 sq. in runner opening
AED 1050 Holley
Mallory Billet distributor, no advance.
Built engine to make peak power somewhere in the 65-6800rpm range.
Started on the heads first while we were waiting on the machine work.
I was happy with the flow numbers:
2.3" valve, 90% throat, 3.1 min. area, 45* valve job.
(left port / right port / exhaust)
.2 155 / 155 / 119
.3 237 / 237 / 177
.4 298 / 304 / 221
.5 339 / 351 / 253
.6 367 / 383 / 294
.7 384 / 396 / 313
.8 393 / 397 / 326
.9 397 / 402 / 337
1.0 403 / 406 / 345
So...
Starting on the short block...block gets deburred, casting flash removed, all oil passages blended, etc. Sorry, didn't get any pics of that.
Pistons get detailed:
Finished:
Rings gapped:
...and checked...
Piston assemblies ready to go together:
...and done:
All racked and ready for rings.
