More Skeletons -- Flex Plate Problems

mercredi 8 octobre 2014

Finished up the shaft seal last week. Went out Sunday for test run. Blew 5 teeth of flex plate. :)bit

Motor is a 427 BBC, 168 tooth scat SFI flex plate, 11 tooth Summit mini starter. Noticed something as I was taking everything apart. Flex plate was on backwards. As a result the starter wasn't able to engage teeth very far in. And it wasn't sitting flush because the raised lip on the "inside" of plate crushed more on one side than the other. So..... as the plate would come around to that side, it would pull even farther away from starter. That's where it broke the teeth off.

I figured it would be an easy fix,,right? Buy a new flex plate, put on correct way, problem solved. So just for shits 'n grins, I flipped this one around and put it on correct way to see how things would line up with starter. Well fack!!! Now it's so close to motor plate, that it is scraping against it as it rotates. Ha,,,now I know why the previous owner ran with the plate on backwards. I'm not going to put the new plate on backwards just to gain clearance on motor plate. So what can I do to get a little clearance between flex plate and motor plate? Or is it OK for the two to rub, until it scrapes off what very little bit it needs to over time?
