My Dad has a 39' Bayliner with twin Cummins 5.9 6BTA 330hp diesels with 800-900 hours. This is their third diesel powered boat, however this is the first one to have an issue with a bit (just barely visable) of black smoke in the exhaust and black soot (more than a bit) on the transom. They have owned the boat for three years and this has just become an issue within the past year, no issues the previous two years.
We've done a fair bit of research and identified some possible causes. I hate to send him down the list, throwing money at each one until it's solved.
My relatively uneducated opinion is it's most likely in need of fuel injector servicing which has never been done, but would like to hear some educated opinions too.
