Wonderful Winter Haven 10/07/2014 0 Comments We had the pleasure of wondering out of town this weekend to the lovely town of Winter Haven, Florida. The skies were a bit gray in the morning but we waited it out and headed out a little later in the day. It turned out to be a gorgeous day on Lake Shipp. We ended up there because my husband was invited down to meet some friends who are power boaters. We love discovering new places and this chain of lakes in Winter Haven connects to the lake that shares a home with LEGOLAND or the old Cypress Gardens. It was our intention to travel through the lakes all the way over to LEGOLAND but after meeting up with old and new boating friends we spent the afternoon enjoying the company and a dip in the lake. Later that afternoon we did motor through the next two lakes and then as a cold front moved in the lakes became a bit choppy and we headed back. What I love about these lakes is the old Florida charm of the town and homes along the lakesides. Little to no large grand homes just your average homes most built from the sixties to nineties. Small town no flash and glitz like time has stood still in a good way. We will go back and visit here again and chart our way all the way to LEGOLAND. This trip is about an hour from central Florida and an easy ride down the highways. Lake Shipp has two boat ramps one looks fairly new with four ramps, ample parking and new restrooms the other is just across the lake and is a single ramp surrounded by a small park. This second park is where we spent most of our day beached and hanging out in the water. The water is not clear but we stayed very close to shore. I have witnessed the “wildlife” for myself on a recent trip to LEGOLAND where three gators sunned themselves on the grassy lawn next to the ski show. Then again we can assume all lakes in Florida have gators. There are plenty of gas stations and places to pick up food minutes from the lake. We did see a few restaurants along an adjoining lake but only one was open. When you plan your next adventure in boating take a road trip there’s nothing like discovering a new place and enjoying a relaxing all day boating outing.
