Hi all I've lurked here for a long time asked a couple of questions and got great answers from GN7, Steele and many others, there's a lot of knowledge here. So a little history on my project. I'm restoring my late fathers 1978 SKV 24 foot daycruiser that he bought new as a bare hull in 78, he had Gene Raceng install the engine that he built and finished the rest of the boat at home. We enjoyed the SKV for many years but know it's time to restore her back the way she was. The project started about eight years ago and then my father got sick and all he wanted was one last ride in his boat, I guess it's my fault that it never got done and he never got his ride, I all ways thought he would get better and we would finish it together.
So on to my problem, the early 70s 454 two bolt Hi Perf Pass block was fitted with a steel crank,7/16 rods TRW forged pistons and oval port heads and a custom ground cam. A few years ago he had the engine freshened up and the machine shop assembled it. Well now it' time to get the old girl back together so I decided to pull the engine down to make sure there was no rust and put in new seals and gaskets. What I found was a mess. The 7/16 rods are now 3/8 all the rods are in the wrong places and there are two #5s.Now I know that as long as all the rod and pistons weigh same it really don't matter what journal they go on, seeing the other stuff that's wrong with it they couldn't have got the weights right. Here's the rest of the problems. The #1 and #2 main caps are in the wrong place, the #2 main bolt is broke (oilpan held it in), it now has a roller cam in it with no thrust plate or button, and the heads have stock looking valves(not the manly sever duty stainless one piece that was in them before) and who knows what cam is in it and the roller lifters look CHEAP!
So what would you all do with this thing? It,s just a big old daycruiser but I would like it to run at least as good as it did. The goal for the rebuild was to see low seventys on the speedo. Should I run the 3/8 rods, put the main caps back in there right spots, check clearances and run it? Or do I start over? Have it line honed etc. ect. ect.?
Looking for your opinions just remember the bigger the budget the longer it will take to get it done, but I want it to be reliable.
Than you all for your input
Paul
