Lake Toho... Beauty and History

It was 80 degrees with a slight breeze and beautiful as we spent Sunday afternoon walking around the Lake Toho waterfront in Kissimmee. A few months back we journeyed down to Lake Toho to check it out and discovered they were in the middle of construction of the waterfront park which is now complete. They have done a wonderful job it is beautiful.

What really strikes us is the blending of the unique history of Lake Toho that has been posted along the waterfront walk educating visitors on how this lovely town came to be from the Indians who called it home to the businessman and landowner who founded their fair town.

The waterfront has numerous pavilions, picnic tables, lush lawns for play, two playgrounds, new splash park, boat dock, snack bar and seating for resting and taking in the beauty of the lakeshore. It’s a lovely place for families to picnic and play.

There are brand new boat ramps where six can launch at a time with pristine docks. I don’t think there’s a spot or cobweb on them! A bait shop and restrooms are right next to the ramp with all you could need from maps, hotdogs, bait and ice. This lake is heavy on the bass fishing and has always been a fishing lake.

A thing to know as a recreational boater on this lake is the lake is fairly shallow and has a lot of shallow grassy bottom peeking out of the lake at its deepest point it’s around 20 feet. This lake is more for riding around to see the beauty and wildlife that inhabit this lake. This is not a lake for tubing or swimming as it is known for its large population of gators. I would not anchor and swim or walk up to the waterfront you might meet a snake or a gator.

We would venture back to Lake Toho with our son to take a look around the lake explore the island in the middle that has been deemed a park and maybe have a picnic lunch and play at the waterfront.

This lake holds history for me too. My dad used to have a Fina station one block over from Lake Toho and on Saturdays I had the pleasure of working from 5 a.m. till 8 p.m., for $20 dollars a day and I got the job of cleaning the bathrooms for the week, lucky me! I remember gassing up all the bass fishermen and their boats back in the day of full service pumps and no ATM cards just cash. After work if my dad wasn’t too exhausted from turning wrenches all day we’d venture down to Lake Toho and cast a line till dark. I remember how overgrown the shore was and looking left and right for a snake or gator. On the ride home we’d feast on Cheetos and Coke. He’s gone home to heaven now but being there Sunday brought to mind those cherished memories. Now many families will make memories there for years to come.

If you’re thinking of taking your boat and checking it out it would be good to call the bait shop ahead and see if there’s a large bass tournament taking place as parking while it has a fair amount would be scarce.

For your next adventure in boating consider a drive down to the Kissimmee lakefront and enjoy the history and beauty of this town. Just another Florida lakefront town that’s gone out of their way to create a beautiful waterfront for recreation and boaters, Kissimmee has done it well!
