Well its official we’re calling it spring! This past Sunday we enjoyed a great day out on the water and our first suntan of the season. The waterways were busy with lots of folks out enjoying the weather. We’re hearing from folks up north that snow is melting as it finally warms up and in a few weeks they expect to out on the water we couldn’t be happier for you! As we ran around the lake we couldn’t help but notice people seemingly disregarding simple safety rules kind of makes me sad to think people could be injured all because they make poor choices.

So it begs the question “Do you practice safe boating?” This is mostly for the family boaters but everyone benefits from an occasional reminder. So I thought I’d list a few basic safety ideas just to get us all back into the season.

· Make sure you’ve got all safety equipment on board and working.

(Life jackets, flares, horn/whistle, extra oar)

· Put the kids in life jackets, 6yrs and under in Florida.

When the waters warm enough we like to have ours practice jumping in and floating in their jacket just to have the feel of it so in case of an emergency they’re not panicked.

· Get those kids swimming again refresh with a lesson or get them in and get them practicing their strokes and floating.

· Talk about your family emergency plan. We have a special needs daughter and a ten year old we talk about what to do if we have an accident, go over board or bad weather. If something happens to us we want our kids to know what to do.

These are just a few ideas for getting back into the boating season on Sunday we saw kids dangling their legs over the front of a pontoon boat as it plowed through the water, not safe or legal. Many boats overloaded for their size and a life jacket is required for every rider whether they have it on or not. There were little ones riding along in the bow or lap of an adult with no lifejacket, if an accident happens or a kid falls off a tragedy can occur.

Listen we’re not preaching we hope we’re teaching that boating is a wonderful family sport but caution must always be taken on the water. Help takes time to reach you on the water and you may not have it so we encourage always plan for the worst and hope for the best.

I hope your next adventure in boating is fabulous and soon and that you’ll consider practicing safe boating every time you hit the water.

We wish everyone a happy healthy boating season.
